Internship

July 20, 2005

I started interning with Kolbrener in Pittsburgh this past May. I actually got the gig through an especially lucky phone call. When trying the usual job boards to find an internship didn’t seem to be getting me anywhere, I went to Pittsburgh Creative’s website and just started cold calling agencies. Kolbrener has had marketing interns in the past, but not design interns. Since I asked, they hired me.

It’s been a great experience for me, and they’ve really handed me a lot of responsibility. I learned to use some new software for a particular project, became a lot more familiar with the production end of the business, and got to work with some very cool clients. They also allowed me to do most of the design work for the YMCA’s Gala invitations, as well as the cover for one of their program booklets:

I created three preliminary designs, which Kirk Littell (their senior designer) helped polish. I was able to go to the client meeting, and our favorite design turned out to be their favorite as well. Thanks to Kolbrener, I now have my first professionally printed piece. Aside from the great work I’ve gotten to do, everyone there has been fantastic to work with. I’m really going to miss this place.
