or the past few months, we’ve been working on this Confessional project. Another Emerging Media project, which we did as a group. First, we started collecting people’s photos of bathroom graffiti. Well, first we named ourselves the Team Three Media Artist Collective. Then we hiked around Southside taking our own photos at various bars, and set up a website to collect some anonymous contributions. I designed a postcard that we had printed up, and we distributed those around Southside as well:
We wanted something eye-catching to solicit some more photos. We had a randomized table of photos on the website, so you’d get a different “bathroom wall” each time you visited. After that was running smoothly, it was on to phase two. Building this:
A full-sized faux confessional, complete with kneeler. We covered the outside in printouts of our collected bathroom graffiti, and in the inside only wrote “Confess” above the window. Finally, on to phase three. We entered our confessional in Chatham’s juried art show, and provided markers. During the exhibit, the curtain was closed, and we allowed people to add their own “confessions” to our piece. We got a great response; the inside walls were covered by the end of the exhibit. As an added bonus, we received the Best in Show award for it. For now, it’s hanging out in one of our T3MAC members’ basement, but we’re thinking of taking it on the road.
